Restaurants on the sea in Positano
In the ‘50s, John Steinbeck, author of the famous reportage which gave Positano worldwide fame, wrote: “ When the Emperor Tiberius moved to Capri because he was so hated in Rome, he didn’t trust anyone. He was afraid people wanted to poison him and perhaps he was right. He didn’t want any bread made with local flour; his boat came to Positano and brought back the flour made in a local mill”.
It was a sign of Positano’s destiny: In this seemingly insignificant way, this small, charming village started building its reputation in the world of commercial trades and with this, imposing its gastronomic traditions and giving birth over the years to the many trendy restaurants to be found in Positano. It seems the ability to satisfy an emperor, if only from a distance and if only to supply flour, was a precursor to satisfying the many internationally recognizable personalities you might meet in a restaurant on the beach in Positano. But the music stars, soubrettes, actors, actresses and film directors, don’t just go to any of the many restaurants on the sea in Positano – they each have their own favourite place which they regularly frequent, believing firmly that it’s both where they can enjoy the best of local Amalfi Coast specialities and also have all their other expectations met.Although it’s clear that traditional Positanese cuisine enjoys the most attention (a dish of spaghetti with sea urchins, for example, is a delicacy not to be missed), it’s also true to say that the choice of other homemade, seafood and Mediterranean dishes, is equally popular and enjoyed by many.
The respect for culinary traditions in Positano, however, also allows for the development of different kinds of cuisine. The chefs of the restaurants on the beach of Positano, just as the best of the beach restaurants along the rest of the Amalfi coast, are willing and able to explore other regional, national and international cuisines, all with confidence, ease and ability and therefore ensuring top class quality.
